Why You Don't Need 20 Apps to Run an Online Store

Shopify is the best-known e-commerce platform in the world. It's reliable, well-designed, and has a huge app store. But there's a big gap between what Shopify says you'll pay and what you actually end up paying.
We looked at the costs of running a mid-sized UK online shop on Shopify versus an all-in-one platform. The results were surprising.
Most serious shops outgrow the Basic plan fast. They move to the standard Shopify plan at £65 per month. This gives you better reports, up to 5 staff accounts, and lower card rates. So far, fair enough.
This cost catches many UK shops off guard. If you use any payment gateway other than Shopify Payments, Shopify charges an extra 1% fee on the standard plan. There are good reasons to use other gateways — like better rates or specific features.
On £10,000 in monthly sales, that's an extra £100 per month going straight to Shopify. That sits on top of your payment processor's fees. Over a year, that's £1,200 in pure platform tax.
This is where costs spiral. Shopify's core platform is bare on purpose. To add features most shops need, you buy third-party apps from the Shopify App Store.
Here's a real app budget for a mid-sized store:
A safe guess puts app costs at £200 per month. Power users spend £500 or more. Each app is another vendor, another link in the chain, and another thing that can slow your site down.
Free Shopify themes are limited. Most shops buy a premium theme from the Theme Store at £250 to £350. It's a one-off cost. But theme updates and tweaks often need a developer, which adds ongoing costs.
Shopify's Liquid code has a steep learning curve. Simple changes — like tweaking the checkout flow, adding custom product fields, or changing cart behaviour — often need a Shopify developer. They charge £50 to £150 per hour.
That's nearly £5,000 per year. This doesn't include developer costs, theme purchases, or more apps as you grow. On the Advanced plan (£259/month), the numbers climb even higher.
All-in-one platforms like Astrocart include email marketing, SEO tools, analytics, customer groups, and stock management as standard. They're not paid extras. Combined with 0% platform transaction fees, the savings add up fast.
For a shop doing £10,000 in monthly sales, the yearly saving of switching from Shopify plus apps to an all-in-one platform can top £3,000.
To be fair, Shopify works well for certain shops. If you need a massive app store, prefer picking best-in-class tools for each job, or already run deep custom integrations on Shopify, switching may not make sense.
But if you're starting fresh or tired of juggling a dozen subscriptions while costs creep up, it's worth seeing what a single platform can do for your business.
Moving from Shopify to another platform is simpler than you'd think. Modern platforms offer CSV import tools that bring across your products, customers, and order history. Most moves take less than a week. Many platforms offer hands-on help to make sure nothing gets lost.
